In a bid to foster a culture of accountability and integrity within Kenya’s political landscape, The Centre for Multiparty Democracy-Kenya (CMD-Kenya) successfully hosted an Ethics and Integrity Training under the Accountable and Democratic Governance Project. This significant initiative, held between Wednesday 4th and Friday 6th December 2024, underscored CMD-Kenya’s commitment to promoting ethical leadership and responsive governance as pillars of democracy.
Promoting Ethics and Integrity Leadership in Politics
The three-day training aimed to equip political party officials with essential knowledge and practical tools to enhance their commitment to ethical standards and governance. By focusing on the intersection of ethics and leadership, the training sought to address the pressing need for accountability in Kenya’s public spaces, ultimately strengthening public trust in political processes.
A Diverse and Inclusive Training
We brought together representatives from five political member parties: United Progressive Alliance Party, United Party of Independent Alliance, Party of National Unity, Kenya Social Congress, and Chama Cha Uzalendo. Participants included officials from Special Interest Group (SIG) leagues, notably Youth, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and Women leagues. This diverse representation ensured an inclusive dialogue that reflected the multifaceted challenges and opportunities for fostering integrity across political structures.
Engaging Formats and Practical Insights
The training adopted an interactive workshop format, featuring:
- Case study analyses
- Peer learning sessions
- Roundtable discussions
Participants tackled real-world scenarios and shared their experiences, enabling a deeper understanding of how to uphold integrity in governance. This practical approach ensured that the concepts discussed during the sessions were directly applicable to their roles within their parties.
Driving Change Through Ethical Standards
At the heart of this initiative was the goal of enhancing the responsiveness and accountability of political parties, thereby contributing to transparent governance. By instilling ethical values among political actors, CMD-Kenya seeks to champion integrity as a driving force for meaningful change in Kenya’s democratic space.
CMD-Kenya remains steadfast in its mission to empower political leaders to embrace and uphold the principles of accountability and integrity.
